Alterations & Contemporary Rear Additions to an Existing House

Land Size:

Building Size:

152 sqm

The single fronted two bedroom dwelling was constructed in the early part of the 1900's on a wide block of land but constructed only to one side of the site. A 1980's "L" shaped extension was added to the rear, housing an additional elevated bedroom and bathroom that was disjointed from the overall planning.

The client's brief was to retain the original timber cottage and convert it to a three bedroom dwelling with a new ensuite, bathroom and open plan kitchen/meals & living area all within the existing footprint while simultaneously demolishing the 1980's extension. The brief was fulfilled by retaining the front two bedrooms and adding new built in robes on either side of the fireplaces and converting the lounge room into the third bedroom complete with its own private bath room.

To meet the modest budget for the project, the existing flat roofed structure at the rear was retained and gutted and a new bathroom and kitchen added including remodelling of the living spaces so that they open onto the rear garden. Contemporary finishes were used throughout to compliment the period house, with the use of vibrant colours predominant. A new timber deck complete with a modern pergola and built in seating provides an escape haven in the garden. The remaining part of the site has been subdivided for a future home.
