These new contemporary two storey town houses were constructed on a very small allotment at the rear of some retail shops and accessed from a pedestrian laneway in a side street. The client's budget was extremely small and the design brief required us to use materials that were standardized and readily available off the shelf in order to keep to a low construction cost. The homes have no actual street presence and are surrounded by commercial and industrial architecture. this became both the catalyst and inspiration for the design solution and we modeled our design to incorporate elements found in warehouse conversions such as rusted steel, timber & cement board. The design process was very liberating as it allowed us to explore the use of conventional materials in an artistic manner providing identity to the homes & a sense of address at the rear of shops.
